Welcome

Welcome to the Sonnenfeld Foundation for the funding and support of medical research in Berlin

The SONNENFELD FOUNDATION takes its name from its founder:

SonnenfeldHans Sonnenfeld was born on 25 December 1901 in Potsdam. After leaving school, in 1918 he began a publishing apprenticeship at the Ullstein publishing house, the most prestigious in Germany at the time.

In 1932 he was given commercial power of attorney to represent the company and took charge of the printing press, which he ran until the end of the Second World War in May 1945. His crucial association over many years with the publishing house was another sign of the high esteem in which his personal drive and character were held.

Foundation’s purpose

The foundation’s purpose is to support the investigation and use of modern examination and treatment methods in medicine. As part of this mission, for example, it might fund the development of modern medical equipment or procure such equipment on behalf of the relevant institution.

Specifically this means:

  • funding research projects where equipment needs to be acquired, or the investigation of modern examination and treatment methods in medicine where a specific line of basic research needs to be undertaken.
  • awarding grants to research students who wish to study for a PhD in a medical subject.
